At the 2018 ICPI Annual Meeting, the ICPI Board of Directors identified workforce development as a priority for the industry. One of the programs being developed to address this issue is the ICPI Boot Camp. The goal of the Boot Camp is take inexperienced workers and to provide them with a basic level of competency on a segmental pavement job site. Frank Bourque from Greenmark was chosen to develop the content for the program. To date the task group has reviewed the student guide, instructor’s guide, presentation slide deck, videos and exam.
To test the materials, a pilot Boot Camp was held on August 20-21. Five students who had limited experience installing interlocking concrete pavements worked with Frank Gandora who instructed the course. Responses from the students was positive.
The course was instructed as two full days with 8 hours of classroom training and 8 hours of hands on training in which the students construct a small interlocking concrete paver patio during the 3 labs. Observers for the training included Frank Bourque, Dean Jurik, Ken Lenhardt, Bryan Hoar and Robert Bowers.
